Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
