An Emotional Event as Rosenior Breaks Boundaries

"Rosenior represents a top coach that knows football inside out, and that's the crucial factor.

"But, in my role as the Blues' first black player, it would be dishonest to claim this news fails to move me."

These were the sentiments expressed by Paul Canoville, the man who made his groundbreaking debut for the Blues' first team as a substitute in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea appointed RC Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, aged 41, to be their next manager after the departure of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of the multi-club BlueCo that also owns Chelsea.

Statistics show only 12 black managers – excluding those holding interim roles – in the Premier League since its inception thirty-four in the past.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is he was raised and developed his game locally, he knows this area," continued Canoville.

"Whenever kids observe a figure like Rosenior in charge of the team they support, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, who comes from a family that fights for equality… that's powerful and shows them that opportunities exist.

"So yes, it is a massive moment for Chelsea, for London, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, give him the necessary tools, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Do the Data Indicate?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became Chelsea manager in 1996 thereby becoming the Premier League's first African heritage manager.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first English black boss in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional present Premier League gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The scarcity of managers of colour across English football corresponds with an absence of representation at executive level.

As per a Black Footballers Partnership 2023 report, forty-three percent of top-flight footballers come from black heritage.

Yet, research from Kick It Out revealed only 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership positions across most Premier League clubs are held by people from minority ethnic backgrounds.

Regarding first-team coaching level, based on figures from eleven clubs, the figure stands at 2%.

Across all coaching roles – encompassing head coaches – from those same 11 clubs, the figure is just 5%.

"He has undoubtedly made history in terms of his appointment as the Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we hope to witness more such appointments," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged there is a wealth of ability that exists within ethnic minority groups... aspiring coaches want the opportunity to show what they can do. We need to persist in striving to dismantle those obstacles once and for all."

Additionally, Rosenior will become the fourth full-time British head coaches presently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that lags behind the continent's other major leagues in terms of homegrown representation.

Sixteen out of twenty first division managers in Serie A are Italian, 11 in La Liga in Spain, 12 in the Bundesliga in Germany while 10 in Ligue 1 in France.

Current Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt all young English coaches with a youth development pedigree are, to some degree no matter who you support, rooting for Liam.

"It is really motivating for up-and-coming British academy coaches to witness an individual land such a role with that profile and everyone hopes he does highly successful."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is on merit'

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as West London clubs, the Hammers and Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint culminating in a brief stint in charge of the third-tier club Brentford FC in 2006.

In 2019, he received an MBE in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered in combating inequality within the sport and wider society.

After Liam hung up his boots he pursued a path in management. He began penning articles for The Guardian, where in 2017 he addressed the under-representation of black coaches. He highlighted that ethnicity does not influence ability arguing that opportunities must be awarded based on qualification.

He also made the view he has often stated: that vast under-representation leads to misunderstandings of players with diverse cultural and ethnic heritage.

During an interview for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted the way his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" and "emotional", noting that he understood the Netherlands international of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from France to West London in July.

In further Guardian columns, Rosenior also admitted to being "ashamed" to hear an unnamed staff member utter a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the inclusion initiative and authored an open letter to the former US President during his first US presidency, accusing him of "overt" prejudice.

He has subsequently made his name as a manager – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their time together at Derby County.

The manager bid his farewells to his former club on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term deal with the Blues.

Chelsea boasted the Premier League's pioneering black boss in Gullit as well as the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
